ALAINA'S AVIARY
Racing Homing Pigeon Breeder
ABOUT ALAINA'S AVIARY
Alaina's Aviary is a small, private facility in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. We breed and sell racing homing pigeons. It all started with a young lady (me!) developing a love for these unique birds. I hope to provide loving, human-pigeon relationships for others.
HOW WE TREAT OUR BIRDS
We feed our pigeons a mix of wild bird seed and egg-layer, as adults, or chick-starter, for hatchlings. Their favorite seems to be hand-fed sliced almonds. :)
We use wood chips or pine shavings for their bedding. We clean their cage once every 2 days or so. They have perches and a big cage to fly around. The minimum size requirements for a cage is about 40" x 30" x 30". Our aviary for our two breeders is 72" x 72" x 32".
FUN FACTS
Homing pigeons were used as messengers during World War I and II.
Pigeons are not born with feathers.
Pigeons are really intelligent and docile animals.
If the female lays an egg then the female and male will take turns incubating. The incubation only takes 15 to 20 days. To see if an egg is fertile, you may use a process called candling.
